read more › Barkston Gardens was originally built on the site of Earls Court House and was let in 1829 to Mary Bradbury to run as a private lunatic asylum for ladies! We found this picture at the Kensington & Chelsea archives of these lovely ladies dancing around the grounds with their pet cows. This was one of only three estates in Earls Court at the time; the rest of land was rural until the dramatic surge of building in the 1880s. John Roberts & James Whitaker built most of the houses here from 1886 to 1889.

read more › Bramham Gardens was unusually built by several different builders from 1883 to 1895 accounting for the varying architectural styles one can see in the square today. 1-18 were built by James Whitaker, who was also responsible for much of Barkston Gardens. These houses are actually on the same street as Bolton Gardens confusingly; heading East, Bramham is on your left hand side while Bolton is on your right! 19-27 were down to H.A. Matthews between 1885-6. Number 28 was constructed by E. & J.W. Sage in 1887, who also created 39-47 ten years later when they had more funds to do so.

read more › Nevern Square was named after the village of Nevern in Pembrokeshire, home of the Edwards Family and, in particular, the Victorian land owner Lord Kensington (who owned most of Earls Court at one time!). Many other streets such as Philbeach, Trebovir and Penywern in Earls Court can also been seen on a map of Pembrokeshire. Built between 1880 and 1886 by Robert and George Whitaker, the style of construction was known as the new 'domestic revival', and controversially contrasted to the surrounding white stucco streets.

read more › Philbeach Gardens was so named after a property in Pembrokeshire, the main home of Lord Kensington who owned the land, and indeed most of Earls Court in the late 1800s. The beautiful crescent shaped communal garden at the centre of Philbeach, was originally designed to be a large mews - thank goodness that plan was altered! Between 1876 and 1882, George Mineard built numbers 1-31, 64-73 & 89-110 in the same white stucco style of his earlier work in Lexham Gardens. At the end of this phase, Mineard began building Brechin Place and decided to finish off 74-86 and 60-63 in a similar red brick fashion.
